Why do a Youth Mental Health First Aid course?

Learning Youth Mental Health First Aid is just as important as physical first aid, particularly if you are a parent, carer, guardian, tutor, teacher, or supporter of a young person aged 12-18. Let me share my story of why I chose to become a Mental Health First Aider.

Please note I discuss anxiety and depression in the video.

About the Youth Mental Health First Aid Course

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course teaches adult participants how to provide initial support to a young person (aged 12–18) who may be experiencing a mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

Participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adolescents, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem and the treatments and supports available. Content is evidence-based and practical.

Topics covered:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Eating Disorders
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Substance Use
  • Psychosis
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Traumatic events

Who is suitable?

Adults who complete the course become equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to provide someone with mental health information and support when it matters most.

Ideal for individual adults (aged 18+) who are teachers, parents, carers/supporters of youths aged 12-18 as well as volunteer/community-based groups.

Come as you are, ready to learn.

After completion of the course, participants can do an optional short online exam (open-book) of approximately 15 questions through Mental Health First Aid Australia's platform. Upon passing, participants will receive their Mental Health First Aiders Certificate which is valid for 3 years. Attendance is required on BOTH days to receive Mental Health First Aid Certification.

Note

This course is educational and should not be viewed as therapy or counselling sessions. We will not discuss individual cases. All participants should be feeling positive and mentally fit. For more information on Youth Mental Health First Aid, check out the MHFA website https://www.mhfa.com.au/.

Important notes for the online course

The online course is open to Australian residents.

It consists of 2 components:

  1.  eLearning component (4-6hrs self-paced)
  2. 4 x online live sessions (1hr 45 min per session)

The eLearning component should be completed before you can attend the online live sessions. This is to ensure you have the knowledge needed to go into detail in the live sessions.

In order to achieve accreditation, all FOUR (4) online sessions must be attended.

When booking, please use your individual email and mobile number - this is used to create your profile on the Mental Health First Aid Australia platform for your eLearning.

After your booking has been finalised, you will be contacted via email with further instructions to access your Mental Health First Aid account dashboard and eLearning modules. You will also receive a voucher to redeem a manual to be sent to your nominated delivery address.

For the live online sessions (Microsoft Teams)

  • Please ensure you use a computer/laptop with a working webcam for the live sessions. If you must use a mobile device, please ensure to have your phone set sideways (landscape orientation) on a stable surface.
  • It is preferable that you have your video on for the duration of the session. This promotes engagement with the content as well as for safety purposes so the instructor can monitor for any distress and attend to your needs.
  • Please join the sessions from a stationary, private and quiet location with no background noises/distractions.
  • Join at least 5-10 minutes earlier for technical testing. Sessions start on time.

Refund Policy

If you can no longer make the Workshop, you can rebook into another Workshop run by myself with at least 48 hours notice before the start of the first day of the Workshop. All monies will be transferred to the new booking.

If you require a refund the following policies apply:

  • Fully refundable 7 days before the first day of the workshop.
  • Partially (50%) refundable 6-3 days before the first day of the workshop.
  • Non-refundable 1-2 days before the first day of the workshop.

If you would like to nominate a substitute to attend the Workshop instead of yourself, please email me at mhfa@amandafung.com.au to provide the name of a substitute to attend.

Note: Mental Health First Aid Australia have set the minimum number of attendees per course to 6 people to ensure the quality of training. Please consider that any last-minute withdrawals may affect other participants. If the minimum number of 6 cannot be met, the Workshop will be postponed and you can rebook into another Workshop date that suits you.
